From personnel positioning to mobile phone maps, car navigation, to applications in various fields of economy and society, geographic information has now become a necessity in people’s lives. All regions are vigorously developing the geographic information industry to drive the economy and society into a new stage of digitalization.
The geographic information industry is a new technology service industry developed on the basis of modern surveying and mapping technology, geographic information system, remote sensing, satellite navigation and positioning technology, and closely integrated with information technology, computer technology, communication technology and network technology. It includes professional fields such as surveying and mapping, geographic information system (GIS), satellite positioning, and aerospace remote sensing, as well as new services such as navigation software, Internet maps, and location-based services (LBS) related to public life.
In 1996, my country formally proposed the development of geographic information industry. Over the past 20 years, the geographic information industry has developed rapidly. In recent years, as the country has listed it as a strategic emerging industry and introduced a series of policies to promote its development, the geographic information industry has developed more and more strongly, showing vigorous vitality.

At present, my country’s geographic information industry has strong independent innovation ability. In terms of geographic information equipment and equipment, from photoelectric instruments to GNSS equipment, continuous operation of reference station systems, from ocean, land, underground to air, a series of independent equipment has been making breakthroughs, total station, RTK, aerial survey UAV, oblique photography The total number of cameras has exceeded that of imported brands; in terms of GIS software, domestic software has taken the lead in 3D GIS, integration of GIS and mapping, and navigation and location services. With more than half of the market share, SuperMap software topped the list with 31.6%, surpassing foreign brands. In 2018, the total R&D investment of the 36 Dixin listed companies increased by 20.5% compared with 2017; the total R&D investment accounted for 8.7% of the total revenue, which was 2% higher than the overall ratio of the 3088 A-share companies. New business formats and new services continue to emerge and show a good growth trend. In 2018, the number of mobile map users in my country reached 720 million, and the penetration rate of car navigation exceeded 50%.
